Course Info
Purpose
This STCW course aims to maintain/update the seafarer’s ability to perform personal survival techniques at sea in the event of abandonment of the ship, which is required in accordance with STCW A Chapter. VI/1-1.
Structure
The course is conducted as theoretical and practical training at VIKING Safety Academy.
Content
The seafarer must practically demonstrate how to: • Don and use lifejacket an immersion suit • Conduct a safe jump in the water from a given height • Right a capsized life raft, while wearing a lifejacket • Swim while wearing a lifejacket • Stay afloat without wearing a lifejacket • Board a survival craft from water while wearing a lifejacket • Board a survival craft from a ship while wearing a lifejacket • Take initial actions on boarding a survival craft to improve chances of survival • Deploying the sea anchor • Use survival craft equipment • Operate location devices including radio equipment
Target group
Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties in the operation of the ship shall, before being assigned to any shipboard duties receive appropriate approved basic training according to STCW A-VI/1-1.
