Course Info
Purpose
This STCW course aims to maintain/update the seafarer’s ability to prevent fires and perform correct firefighting in the event of fire on the ship, which is required in accordance with STCW A Chapter. VI/1-2.
Structure
The course is delivered as blended learning whereas the practical training will be conducted at a VIKING partner location. Theoretical training will be completed online prior to practical course date.
Content
The seafarer must in a truly realistic training condition demonstrate the following: • Operate different types of portable fire extinguishing equipment • Don fire-fighter´s equipment and breathing apparatus correctly and conduct a buddy check • Proper use of breathing apparatus and the appropriate time of retrieval • Extinguish minor fires, such as electrical fires, oil fires, propane fires using portable extinguishers and fire blankets • Extinguish extensive fires with water, jet, and spray nozzles • Extinguish fires with foam, powder, or any other suitable chemical agent • Fight fire in a closed and smoke filled room, while wearing a breathing apparatus • Extinguish a fire with water spray or any other suitable fire extinguishing agent in a simulated accommodation or engine room filled with smoke • Extinguish an oil fire with CO2, spray nozzles, dry chemical powder, or foam applicators • Conduct a rescue in a smoke filled room wearing a breathing apparatus equipment
Target group
Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties in the operation of the ship shall, before being assigned to any shipboard duties receive appropriate approved basic training according to STCW A-VI/1-2.
